Wien is facing extreme heat on Thursday, with temperatures climbing to as high as 38°C across parts of the city. According to meteorologists, this marks only the beginning of the next major heatwave. GeoSphere Austria has issued the second-highest weather warning level, highlighting the severity of the conditions.

A scorching Thursday — and Friday will be even hotter

Forecasts show that Vienna has entered its second heatwave of the year. While Thursday already pushes the limits with 38°C, the real peak is expected on Friday, when temperatures may reach up to 39°C. The weekend will offer little relief, with values hovering around 37°C.

Intense sun, no wind, and barely any shade

Thursday’s weather brings clear skies, strong sunshine, and almost no wind, creating conditions that feel even hotter than the measured temperatures. GeoSphere Austria advises residents to:

    • Avoid direct sunlight, especially during midday
    • Protect children from heat exposure
    • Stay away from sealed, unshaded urban areas that trap heat

Vienna records its 29th tropical night of 2026

The heatwave follows yet another tropical night, with temperatures staying above 20°C. It was already the 29th such night this year — a sign of how exceptional and persistent the summer of 2026 has been.

    No quick relief in sight

Those hoping for a rapid cooldown will have to wait. Meteorologists warn that the current heatwave will continue through Friday and into the weekend, making Thursday more of a starting point than a peak. Vienna is bracing for several consecutive days of extreme heat, challenging residents, infrastructure, and public health services.
